The Gilmore Family

A lot is written about the Gilmore family on the internet and there is a lot that is unknown. This is a basic line up.

Generation One

This line of the Gilmore family was originally from Ayrshire, Scotland. The earliest member so far found in Thomas Gilmore, who married Marian Sterling in Ulster, Ireland. One source says that Marian's father was Thomas Kennedy, of the Kennedys of Ayrshire, but there is no evidence as to how this link was made. Thomas and Marian had a son named John Gilmore.

Generation Two

John Gilmore was born about 1703 in Ulster, Ireland and died on 10 Oct 1759 in Augusta County, Virginia. He married Agnes Anderson who died also on 10 Oct 1759. They were among the first to settle Kerr's Creek in Rockbridge County, Virginia. They were both killed, along with a couple of children, during a raid by Indians (the Shawnees) on their settlement. Not sure when John came to America with his father, but the family originally settled in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and after several years John moved to Virginia. Some sources say that the family immigrated to America about 1840. One of their sons was Captain James Gilmore.

Generation Three

James Gilmore was born about 1720. Many sources say it was about 1710, but many DAR indexes put it at about 1720, and this seems more reasonable seeing that he fought in the Revolution. He was born in Ireland and died in Rockbridge County, Virginia in about 1783. He was Lt. James Gilmore in the Virginia Colonial Militia as dated 1758, and ironically was probably away fighting Indians when his parents were killed. During the American Revolution he was Captain James Gilmore in the Virginia Militia commanding the Company of Rockbridge Rifles under Major Francis Triplett. The Rockbridge Rifles were a major factor in the winning of the Battle of Cowpens. He married Martha Ann Dennison (some say the name was Beatie) in Pennsylvania who was born in 1720 in Scotland and died sometime after 1785. James and Martha are buried at High Bridge Church Cemetery. One of their children was named Mary Gilmore.

Generation Four

Mary Gilmore was born in 1742, probably in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Many sources put her as being born in Scotland, but the family had immigrated to Ireland and then to America long before she was born. She died on 12 Dec 1789 in Wythe County, Virginia. On 14 Dec 1763 in Augusta County, Virginia she married William Foster who was born about 1740 in Ireland and died 18 Ju;y 1803 in Wythe County, Virginia. Just like his father-in-law, he fought in the American Revolution. He fought with the 7th Virginia Militia. One of their daughters was Catherine (or Katherine) Foster, who was born on 17 Jan 1770 [see the Long Family].
