The earliest member of this line of the family that has been found so far is Joseph Long. Some sources have put his father as being Thomas Long (1740-1770), but this is unproven.

Joseph Long was born in Virginia on 23 July 1770 and died in Texas on 6 Jan 1837. This would put him as being one of the early settlers of the Republic of Texas. He probably came to Texas with his son, Samuel Alexander Long, who fought in the War for Texas Independence. Joseph married Catherine Foster who was born 17 Jan 1770 in Virginia and died on 25 Aug 1811 in Bedford County, Tennessee. Catherines parents were William Foster and Mary Gilmore [see the Gilmore family] Joseph and other Long relatives bought and sold quite a lot of land in Bedford and Rutherford Counties in Tennessee between 1910 and 1824. One son of Joseph and Catherine was named Henry Long.

Generation Two

Henry Long was born in Virginia on 29 July 1795 and died in Caldwell County, Texas on 16 Aug 1867. He was a businessman, blacksmith, and Methodist minister. The church which he helped to organise still exists in Shelbyville, Tennessee. I believe it is now called Singleton United Methodist Church. He was also a partner in the unsuccessful William F. Long & Co. in Shelbyville. In 1816 in Bedford County he married Rachel Anderson who was born about 1798 in Kentucky and died in 1865 in Caldwell County, Texas. She was the daughter of Samuel Anderson and Rebecca Black. One son of Henry and Rachel's was Andrew S. Long.

Generation Three

Andrew S. Long was born about 1820 in Bedford County, Tennessee and died on 23 May 1885, probably in Grimes County, Texas. No one knows what the middle intial "S." stood for. It is said that the Long Family first migrated from Bedford County, Tennessee to Talladega, Alabama. This is possible, the two counties virtually border each other, and in about 1837 a colera epidemic swept through Shelbyville and Bedford County. What ever the case, both Henry Long and Andrew aquired land in Louisiana in October 1849 in the Parishes which virtually border Panola County, Texas. This could explain why Andrew is shown in the 1850 Census in Panola County. Census and family records say that eldest daughter, Elizabeth, was born in Louisianain 1852. Andrew married Alabama Caroline Jones who was born in 1833 in Alabama and died in 1904 in Navarro County, Texas. She was the daughter of John Adam Crain Jones and Martha W. Jenkins. According to Pension records, they were married on 10 Jan 1849, unfortunately the question on the Pension application which asks "where" was not answered, which leads to speculation as to whether the marriage was in Louisiana or Alabama. Circumstancial evidence suggests Louisiana.

Andrew Long and family migrated in Texas to first Panola County (county seat: Carthage, Texas) , then to Caldwell County, on to Harris County (near the town of Spring, Texas north of Houston), then to Grimes County. This move to Grimes County from the Spring, Texas area was made at least by 1878 when he is listed on tax rolls and a daughter is married there. During the Civil War, Andrew served in the Company C of the 20th Texas Infantry, which mainly covered Galveston, Harris, Montgomery, and Walker Counties. Andrew mainly went by the name "A.S. Long" and Alabama "A.C. Long". Their children were as follows:

1. Martha Jane Long b. 20 Jan 1850 d. 26 Aug 1850

2. Elizabeth Rachel Long b. 6 July 1852 married John Golden in 1869 then Samuel Stanfield 20 Dec 1876 [see the Stanfield Family]

5. William Henry Long b. 10 Apr 1859 signed A.C. Long's pension application as a witness in 1903

6. Urzenia Caroline Long b. 29 Dec 1860 was known as "Zenia" married Frank York In Grimes County, Texas on 12 May 1878

7. Andrew Long b. 5 Feb 1863

8. Samuel Galveston Long b. 18 Feb 1865 married Sadie J. Golden in Montgomery County, Texas in 1891 [more than likely a relative of John Golden]
