The Rollins, Boothe, Anderson, and Hawkins Families

Generation One

John Hawkins was born probably about 1450 at Lavistock, Cornwall and was dead on or before 1490 when his heirs took control of the lands he held at Plymouth. He married Joan Amadas (or Amados). Her father was William Amadas of Launceton, Cornwall, who was Sgt. at Arms to Henry VIII. One of their children was Captain William Hawkins.

Generation Two

Captain William Hawkins was born was born sometime before 1490 at Plymouth, Devonshire and died in 1554. He was an officer in the navy of Henry VIII and was held in high esteem by the king. He is thought to be the Hawkins who commanded the Royal Navy ship "Great Galley". He was also perhaps the first Englishman to open up trade routes with West Africa. This later was to include slaves. He married Joan Towne Trelawney, daughter of Roger Trelawney, who was born about 1500 at Launceton, Cornwall and died on 10 July 1589. William and Joan had two sons, Sir William Hawkins and Admiral Sir John Hawkins.

Generation Three

Sir William Hawkins was born probably at Plymouth sometime before 1530 and died 7 October 1589. He commanded the Royal Navy ship "Griffin" in the fight against the Spanish Armada and was several times Mayor of Plymouth. Later William and his brother Admiral Sir John Hawkins set up a trading company along with their cousin Sir Francis Drake and a few others. William then seemed to mainly stay home and be a sort of CEO of the company while John made trade voyages. When they found the profitability of the slave trade, the voyages mainly carried slaves to the New World. Queen Elizabeth the First called their deallings "despicable". But when she saw William and John's balance books she invested heavily in the next voyage. When William died his brother erected a monument to him in St Nicholas Church, Deptford (the church is not longer there.) John was killed at sea off the coast of Puerto Rico on 12 November 1595 while on a voyage with Sir Francis Drake. William had married Mary (or Marie) Halse of Devon, the daughter of John Halse and Joan Tothill. One of William and Mary's daughters was Elizabeth Hawkins.

Generation Four

Elizabeth Hawkins was born on 21 March 1583 in London. Existing official records show that on 20 December 1611 she married Richard Anderson who was born in 1585 and died sometime after 1635 in Virginia. He was the son of Sir Edmund Anderson who was Lord Chief Justice in London. Richard was on the passenger list of the "Merchant's Hope" 1535. Elizabeth must have died before this time or remained in England for some reason because there is no record of her making it to America. One of Elizabeth and Richard was Robert Anderson.

Generation Five

Robert Anderson was born in 1613 in England and died after 1666 in New Kent County, Virginia. Some sources say that he went to America a short time before Richard Anderson. He embarked on the "Ann & Elizabeth" on 27 April 1635 for Virginia. He is listed in York County Wills and Deeds in 1657 as being a juror (in the old meaning, probably being a judge). He married a woman whose last name was probably Bartelot. One of their sons was named Robert Anderson.

Generation Six

Robert Anderson or Bartelot Anderson as he was called by family, was born in about 1642 in York County, Virginia and died in 1712 in the same county. Travelled back to England at least once and was a vestryman for the parish church. His wife is not known, but they had a son named Captain William Anderson.

Generation Seven

Captain William Anderson was born about 1680 in New Kent County, Virginia and died in King William County, Virginia in 1717. In 1710 he was appointed Justice of the Peace in King William County. It is not clear what sort of a captain he was, but it seems that the family might have still been involved in some sea trade. In about 1700 he married Dorothy Dabney who was the daughter of Cornelius Dabney. She was born in about 1683 in New Kent County and died some time after 1720 in King William County. Her father was born in 1630 in Lincolshire (England) and died in 1694 in New Kent County, Virginia. He was baptised on 11 December 1630 at Bucknall, Lincolnshire. He was among other things a interpreter of Indian language, and his wife is said to have had some sort of connection to Pocahontas. There are some sources which say that the Dabney family was originally from France, derived from the name d'Aubney, and are descended from the French aristocracy. This information is wrong. Recent research seems to show that the Dabneys were always from Lincolnshire. One of Captain William Anderson and Dorothy's sons was named Dabney Anderson.

Generation Eight

Dabney Anderson was born about 1704 in New Kent County, Virginia and died in 1735 in King William County. The name of his wife is not known, but one of their daughters was named Ruth Anderson.

Generation Nine

Ruth Anderson was born about 1715 and married Daniel Boothe, who was born about 1710 in Caroline County, Virginia and died in 1749 in the same county. They had two sons whose names were Daniel Boothe, Jr and John Boothe. John was a soldier in the Revolutionary War, and it might be expected that Daniel, Jr was as well.

Generation Ten

Daniel Boothe, Jr was born in 1730 in Caroline County, Virginia and died about 1802 in the Hillsborough District of North Carolina. He married Priscilla Tapley, the daughter of Adam Tapley, who was born about 1755 in Orange County, North Carolina and died there about 1816. One of their sons was named Joseph M. Boothe.

Generation Eleven

Joseph M. Boothe was born in 1768 in Virginia and died in 1824 in Amite County, Mississippi. The name of his wife is not known. He is not to be confused with the Joseph M. Boothe who married Sarah Barbee in North Carolina. That Joseph is thought to be Daniel, Jr's brother. Joseph had a daughter named Mary "Polly" Boothe.

Generation Twelve

Mary "Polly" Booth married John Rollins who was born about 1775 and died in 1831 in Louisiana. [see The Rollins Family]
